🍳 You’re going to need a bigger table for this breakfast

London never seems to run short on people willing to quietly step up for others.

Earlier this summer, I joined an outreach session with Project Hope and saw firsthand the army of volunteers it takes to prepare the weekly caravan of cars with clothes, toiletries, sandwiches, hot meals and treats - and the genuine gratitude of the people they serve.

Now there’s another easy way to pay that generosity forward: every Monday at Powerhouse Brewing, a portion of hot dog sales supports Happy’s Place, an in-home rescue giving senior and higher-risk dogs another chance. Dogs helping dogs, people helping people … sometimes doing a little good is as simple as ordering lunch.

The Gist: London’s free Outdoor Movie Nights are running on two new battery-powered generators this summer, replacing the traditional gas-powered units. Funded through London Hydro’s sponsorship, the new generators help reduce emissions, eliminate generator noise and make setup easier for city staff. They’re the first battery-powered generators being used for City of London special events and could be used at other community events in the future.

Why It Matters: It’s a small, practical upgrade that makes a popular free family event a little cleaner and quieter for moviegoers and nearby neighbours, while giving the city another option for powering future community events.

The Gist: London has already passed the housing target it promised to meet through the federal Housing Accelerator Fund, reaching 11,966 new units against a goal of 11,803 about four weeks ahead of the Sept. 7 deadline. The city has also completed all 11 changes and programs tied to the funding, including encouraging office-to-home conversions downtown, allowing denser housing near transit and offering incentives for additional units on existing properties.

Why It Matters: London needs housing, and getting nearly 12,000 new units into the pipeline is a meaningful step toward giving residents more options as the city grows. Hitting the target also puts London in position to receive its fourth and final payment from the federal program, although that money still depends on CMHC reviewing the city’s final report.

The Cappa brings a leisurely Turkish breakfast to the neighbourhood, with tables filled with warm gozleme, a stuffed flatbread, honeyed clotted cream and fragrant menemen, a Turkish-style egg dish with tomatoes and peppers. Sun pours into the all-season room, making it an inviting spot to linger over Turkish coffee and catch up in one of the thoughtfully styled dining areas. There’s even a clever mirror set up for quick photos, plus easy parking and plenty of room to settle in.

Born from a love of old-school paper and a little literary chaos, City Lights Bookshop turns an afternoon browse into a proper treasure hunt. The creaky floors and packed shelves have that nostalgic energy where everyone can find their lane, whether you’re hunting down 25¢ paperbacks, rare sci-fi classics or forgotten vinyl.

It’s an easy place to lose track of time, especially on a slow afternoon when you’re in the mood to browse without a plan.
